Fibre optic cables enable reliable use of hot metal detectors at high ambient temperatures and in confined installation spaces. They transmit the infrared radiation emitted by the hot object to the sensor, allowing it to be positioned flexibly in a protected location outside the immediate hot zone.
Various cable lengths and matching optics allow flexible adaptation to different installation conditions and temperature ranges. Matching accessories also simplify installation and protect the optics from contamination.

When are fibre optic cables used with hot metal detectors?
Fibre optic cables are used when the hot metal detector cannot be mounted directly at the detection point due to high ambient temperatures, intense radiant heat or confined installation spaces. This allows the sensor electronics to be positioned in a protected location outside the area exposed to these harsh conditions.
How does a fibre optic cable work with a hot metal detector?
The fibre optic cable transmits the infrared radiation emitted by the hot object from the optics to the sensor electronics. The hot metal detector evaluates the received radiation and generates a switching signal when the set response temperature is reached.
What should be considered when selecting a fibre optic cable?
Key selection criteria include the required cable length, ambient temperature, installation conditions and required detection distance. The fibre optic cable, optics and hot metal detector must be combined to suit the specific application.
In which industries are fibre optic cables used?
Typical applications include steelworks and rolling mills, forges, continuous casting plants, tube and section mills, and industrial furnaces. Additional accessories simplify installation and can protect the optics from dust, steam and other contaminants.
Further technical information can be found in the datasheet for fibre optic cables up to +290 °C and the datasheet for fibre optic cables below 400 °C. Various optics for devices with fibre optic cables are also available to ensure optimal adaptation to the respective temperature range and detection distance.
